Hot vs. Regular Yoga

The biggest difference between hot and regular yoga is the amount of calories that are burned during the exercise session. While both yoga practices consist of various stretching postures to promote relaxation and increased flexibility, those who participate in hot yoga sessions are able to burn up to 30 percent more calories than traditional yoga sessions. Specifically, one 90-minute hot yoga session can burn up to 1,000 calories. Here's how:

  • Hot yoga is done in a studio that is heated to about 105 degrees Fahrenheit, at 40 percent humidity.
  • The excess heat forces the body to work harder during each position, thereby creating a greater oxygen demand and causing one's lungs to expand to up to 50 percent. In traditional yoga, the lungs expand anywhere from 35 to 40 percent.
  • Muscles are better able to absorb oxygen and dissipate heat. Muscle endurance is also greater.
  • Finally, in hot yoga, the cardiovascular system also works much harder compared to traditional yoga, as the heart needs to pump more blood and oxygen to the body and its organs throughout the session.
